    Meta Title & Description

    Term #133

The Meta Title is the headline shown in the SERP and browser tab (up to 60 characters). The Meta Description is the text below it (up to 160 characters). Both directly affect Google CTR.

    In practice

Meta Title and Description are your 'free Google ad.' Google has already shown you — now the question is: will the customer click? A weak title gets a 1% CTR. A strong one gets 5-8%. Same ranking, 5-8x the traffic.

    Common misconception

'Meta description affects ranking.' Not directly. Google has stated the meta description isn't a ranking factor. But a higher CTR can indirectly boost ranking. The description's job is to earn clicks, not to rank.

    How to fix it

Low CTR from Google? (1) GSC → Performance → look at pages with high impressions and low CTR (hidden gold), (2) rewrite the meta title: add numbers ('7 tips'), a question, or a clear value ('free,' 'fast'), (3) rewrite the meta description: a clear CTA plus a unique differentiator ('fastest shipping in the country').

    Example

A sports store's 'running shoes' page ranked #3 on Google with a 2.1% CTR. Changing the meta title from 'Running Shoes — Store' to 'Running Shoes for Men & Women — Free Shipping over $50 | Brand Name' raised CTR to 5.8% — same ranking, +176% traffic.

    Priority

Run a monthly meta audit: GSC → Performance → Pages → sort by impressions → review CTR. The top 20 pages with low CTR are your first opportunity. A meta rewrite takes 30 minutes with a strong ROI.
