Customer Acquisition Funnel
Analysis of a new customer's specific journey — from initial discovery (impression) to first purchase. Different from a conversion funnel, which also includes existing customers. Focuses on CAC and acquisition quality.
In practice
A customer acquisition funnel focuses on the question: 'where are we losing new customers before their first purchase?' It's separate from a conversion funnel because a new customer's experience differs from a returning one's — less trust, longer consideration, and a greater need for strong social proof.
Common misconception
'The acquisition funnel = the conversion funnel.' No. A conversion funnel includes returns and repeat purchases. An acquisition funnel ends at the first purchase. A returning customer who abandons their cart is a retention problem, not an acquisition one.
How to fix it
Acquisition funnel underperforming? (1) Map the stages: impression → click → landing page → product page → cart → checkout → purchase, (2) measure drop-off at each stage for new customers (first-time visitors in GA4), (3) check whether trust signals are strong enough for a customer who doesn't yet know you.
Example
Supplement store: acquisition funnel vs. retention funnel. New: 0.8% CR. Returning: 4.2% CR. New-customer drop-off was on the product page (not enough social proof). Added: prominent reviews + a 'best seller' badge. New-customer CR rose to 1.6%.
Priority
Run a separate acquisition-funnel analysis in GA4 using a first-time-users segment. This reveals problems hidden when looking at all users together.
