Safety Stock
Extra inventory held beyond what average demand requires — protects against demand fluctuations, lead-time delays, and forecasting errors. Safety Stock = Z × √Lead Time × Demand STD.
In practice
Safety stock is inventory management's 'landing cushion.' Supplier running late? Safety stock covers it. Sudden demand spike? Safety stock covers it. Without safety stock, stockout risk is high. With too much safety stock, capital is tied up.
Common misconception
'Safety stock = 30 days of inventory for every product.' No. Safety stock should be proportional to demand variability and lead time. A product with steady demand and a short lead time needs low safety stock. A product with volatile demand and a supplier in China needs high safety stock.
How to fix it
Frequent stockouts? (1) Increase safety stock for Category A products, (2) Improve demand-forecasting accuracy, (3) Consider multi-sourcing to reduce lead-time uncertainty, (4) Set Reorder Point = Safety Stock + (Average Daily Sales × Lead Time).
Example
Cookware store: 12 stockouts/month on top sellers. Safety stock was 7 days. Analysis found high demand STD and a 35-day lead time from China. Raised safety stock to 21 days. Stockouts dropped to 1-2/month.
Priority
Calculate safety stock for every Category A SKU. Simple formula: average daily sales × (lead time + safety days). 'Safety days' = 14-30 depending on supplier reliability. Build it into your WMS or spreadsheet.
