Retargeting Pixel
A small JavaScript snippet embedded on the site that tracks visitor actions — visits, product views, add-to-cart. The basis for retargeting, lookalikes, and conversion measurement. Meta Pixel, Google Tag.
In practice
The pixel is your 'eyes' outside the site. The moment a visitor enters the store, the pixel 'tags' them. Now, when they browse Instagram, they see the product they viewed. When they search Google, they see an ad. The pixel is what turns an unfinished visit into a purchase.
Common misconception
'The pixel is a privacy problem that complicates everything.' A pixel is a tool. The problem: a pixel without cookie consent violates GDPR. A pixel with a properly configured consent banner is fully legitimate. Don't fear the pixel — set up cookie consent and use it.
How to fix it
Pixel not reporting conversions? (1) Meta Pixel Helper (Chrome extension) — check the pixel is firing, (2) Check events — Purchase, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout — are they all set up? (3) Check deduplication — pixel and Conversions API together need a matching event ID, (4) iOS 14: set up Aggregated Event Measurement in Events Manager.
Example
Jewelry store: pixel installed but with no Purchase event. Meta showed ROAS 1.2 (because it didn't see conversions). Added the Purchase event — Meta then saw 340 conversions/month it didn't know about. Reported ROAS 'rose' to 4.8 (nothing actually changed — only the reporting improved). Optimization improved by 31%.
Priority
Pixel setup is day 1. Before any advertising: (1) Meta Pixel + 5 standard events, (2) Google Tag + conversion actions, (3) a cookie consent banner. Without a pixel, advertising is blind. With one, it's smart.
