    Headless CMS

    Term #149

A CMS without a built-in front end — it manages content and delivers it via API. Lets you display content across any channel (website, app, IoT, smartwatch) from one source. Contentful, Sanity, Strapi.

    In practice

A Headless CMS solves a specific problem: a store selling via web, app, and smart TV needs to update content once and publish everywhere. With a traditional CMS (WordPress): update 3 places. Headless: update once → publish everywhere.

    Common misconception

'Every store needs a Headless CMS.' No. WordPress + WooCommerce (a traditional CMS) is enough for 95% of stores. A Headless CMS suits the 5% with multi-channel content needs. Always ask: are we managing content across 3+ different channels?

    How to fix it

Headless CMS too complex to manage? (1) Check whether you really need it — maybe WordPress is enough, (2) Add a friendly interface (Contentful and Sanity have a Studio UI), (3) Check webhooks — is content auto-published to every channel?

    Example

Retail chain: website + app + in-store kiosks. Every price/content change meant 3 separate updates = 3 hours of work. Headless CMS (Contentful): update once → publish everywhere → 20 minutes. Savings: 40 hours/month.

    Priority

Headless CMS is step 4 in the maturity model: (1) WordPress/Shopify → (2) Optimization → (3) Headless Commerce → (4) Headless CMS. Don't skip to step 4 before it's justified.
