    Funnel Analysis

    Term #168

Analysis showing how many visitors move through the stages of the purchase process — and where they drop off. In GA4: Explore → Funnel Exploration. Displays the drop-off rate at each stage.

    In practice

Funnel analysis is the purchase journey's 'X-ray.' 10,000 visitors → 2,500 on a product page → 800 added to cart → 320 at checkout → 180 purchases. The biggest drop-off is the first thing to fix. Don't guess — measure.

    Common misconception

'Funnel analysis is only for big stores.' Any store with GA4 Enhanced Ecommerce gets funnels for free. 30 minutes of setup in GA4 Explore gives you a complete picture of every stage.

    How to fix it

    Funnel shows a high drop-off at a specific stage? (1) Product page → cart: a price/image/description problem, (2) Cart → checkout: a shipping-cost or mandatory-signup problem, (3) Checkout → purchase: a payment/trust/complexity problem, (4) Every stage: use a heatmap + session recordings to diagnose.

    Example

Electronics store: funnel revealed a 68% drop from checkout to purchase. Analysis: the payment page had 3 missing fields causing errors. Fix: 3 hours of dev work. Drop fell to 31%. $24,000 in additional revenue/month.

    Priority

Set up funnel analysis in GA4 before any optimization. 30 minutes → identifies the biggest problem. Do a weekly funnel review. Every improved drop-off point raises overall CR.
