FOMO – Fear of Missing Out

    Term #141

A psychological trigger that creates urgency and drives action. In eCommerce: stock counters, countdown timers, 'X people viewing now,' 'price rises in 24 hours.' Boosts CR by 10-40%.

    In practice

FOMO works because the brain reacts more strongly to potential loss than potential gain (loss aversion). 'Only 3 left' drives more action than '300 in stock.' Genuine, authentic FOMO is a powerful tool. Fake FOMO destroys trust once discovered.

    Common misconception

'FOMO always works.' Fake FOMO (a stock counter that resets daily, a timer that restarts) — customers learn to ignore it. Worse, it destroys trust. Use only genuine FOMO: real inventory, a promotion that actually ends, real customer counts.

    How to fix it

FOMO not working? (1) Check visibility — on mobile, is the timer/scarcity indicator visible without scrolling? (2) check credibility — does a returning customer see the same timer tomorrow? (3) check placement — FOMO elements should sit near the CTA, not at the bottom of the page.

    Example

A hair products store added a genuine '[X] units left' counter plus a 48-hour countdown for a sale. CR rose 28% during promotions. 'Units left' alone (no timer): +14%. Timer alone: +11%. Together: +28%.

    Priority

FOMO is essential for flash sales and limited promotions. Automatically set up a scarcity widget for any product with inventory under 10 units. Tools: Hurrify, Amai, FeaturePot (Shopify).
