eCommerce P&L
A financial report detailing all of a store's revenue and expenses. eCommerce P&L structure: Revenue → Gross Profit → Marketing Contribution → EBITDA → Net Profit. The basis for every financial decision.
In practice
A P&L is the financial-health 'movie.' A balance sheet is a photo (a moment in time). A P&L is motion (over a period). Without a P&L, you manage by feel. With one, you manage by facts. Every store owner needs a monthly P&L.
Common misconception
'A P&L is accounting for accountants.' A simple eCommerce P&L: Revenue - COGS - Variable Marketing - Fixed Costs = Net Profit. 10 lines. A store owner who never checks the monthly P&L is flying blind. 30 minutes/month gives full business awareness.
How to fix it
No P&L? Build one now: (1) revenue — from GA4 or your platform, (2) COGS — from supplier invoices, (3) marketing — from ad platforms, (4) salaries + rent + platform fees, (5) = net profit. You don't need accounting software — you need Excel. Basic version: 1 hour.
Example
Cosmetics store: revenue $70K/month, never built a P&L. Built one for the first time: COGS $24K, marketing $17K, salaries $10K, fees $5K, rent $2K = expenses $58K. Net: $12K (16%). Discovered marketing was 25% of revenue — above target. Cut $3.4K — net rose to $15K.
Priority
A monthly P&L is not optional. Set a 'P&L Day' — the 5th of every month, half an hour, summarizing the prior month. After 3 months, you'll know which decisions affect the bottom line.
