    Cross-Sell

    Term #108

Offering complementary products at the point of purchase. Buying a camera prompts a memory card offer. Buying shoes prompts a socks offer. Raises AOV by 10-30% at no acquisition cost.

    In practice

Cross-selling is like a savvy salesperson's question. In a physical store: 'Do you already have...?' Online: 'Customers who bought X also bought Y.' The key: success depends on relevance — an unrelated product added 'just because' won't sell.

    Common misconception

'More cross-sells means higher AOV.' The paradox of choice applies — more than 3 cross-sell offers on a product page confuses shoppers and lowers conversions. At checkout, one prominent cross-sell (an order bump) beats five offers.

    How to fix it

Cross-sell not working? (1) Check relevance — is the algorithm choosing correctly? (2) check placement — product page? checkout? thank-you page? (3) check price — a cross-sell at 50% of the main product's price outperforms one at 200%.

    Example

A watch store added a 'watch cleaning kit' cross-sell ($13) at checkout next to a $100 watch. 28% of buyers added it. AOV rose from $100 to $132. Five hours of setup work generated an extra $8,000/month.

    Priority

Basic cross-sell moves: (1) 'Frequently Bought Together' on the product page, (2) an order bump at checkout (one simple, low-priced item). Don't overcomplicate — simple cross-sells beat complex ones.
