Ad Fatigue
A decline in ad performance after repeated exposure to the same audience. Shows up as: falling CTR, rising CPM, low relevance score. Requires creative refresh and audience expansion.
In practice
Ad fatigue is a campaign's 'slow death.' A campaign starting with a 2.5% CTR drops to 1.8% after 3 weeks, then 0.9% after 6. Same ad, same audience, less attention. The human brain filters out repeated content. The fix: refresh creative before you hit this point.
Common misconception
'Ad fatigue is just a design issue.' No. Ad fatigue can occur even with new creative if the audience is too small. An audience of 10,000 with 3 ads means everyone sees each ad 10-15 times/month — rapid fatigue. Solution: expand the audience and change the creative.
How to fix it
Ad fatigue setting in? (1) Check frequency — above 5-7/month is a red zone, (2) Change creative — not just colors, change the concept and hook, (3) Expand the audience — a broader lookalike, (4) Add exclusions — remove people who already bought, (5) Rotate 3-4 creatives automatically.
Example
Fashion store: a single Meta ad running for 6 weeks. Week 1: CTR 2.8%, ROAS 4.2. Week 6: CTR 0.7%, ROAS 1.4. Frequency hit 9.2. Switched to 4 creatives with rotation — CTR recovered to 2.1% within a week.
Priority
Run a weekly creative review: check frequency and CTR trend. Rule: once frequency crosses 7, refresh the creative. In Meta Ads: Business Manager → Campaign → Ad Set → check frequency in the columns.
