# What is UTM Parameters?

What is UTM Parameters? Tags added to links to identify traffic source in GA4. UTM Source (Google, Facebook), Medium (CPC, Email), Campaign (campaign name).

## How it works in practice

UTMs are every campaign's 'nametag.' Without UTMs, GA4 classifies email links as direct traffic and Facebook links as social. With UTMs, you know exactly: 'the Black Friday campaign on Instagram drove 340 purchases worth $23,000.'

## Related metrics

- GA4 — UTMs feed into GA4
- Attribution — UTMs enable accurate attribution
- Campaign Tracking — UTM = campaign tracking
- Email Marketing — every email link needs a UTM

## Common misconception

'UTMs are only for paid advertising.' UTMs are useful for every channel: email, SMS, QR codes, Instagram bio, LinkedIn, even PDFs. Any channel without a UTM is traffic that gets lost in GA4 as direct.

## How to fix it

UTM not showing up in GA4? (1) Check the UTM is valid — use Google's Campaign URL Builder, (2) Check the URL isn't broken (a link that's too long gets truncated), (3) Check GA4 is set to collect UTMs — source, medium, campaign as dimensions.

## Real-world example

Cosmetics store: an email campaign without UTMs → GA4 showed 85% direct traffic. Added UTMs to every email link → discovered email was 31% of traffic, not direct. The attribution fix led to correct budgeting.

## Where to start

Define a consistent UTM naming convention before your first campaign. Template: Source (facebook/google/email), Medium (cpc/email/sms), Campaign (campaign-name-date). Google's Campaign URL Builder is the simplest tool.
