# What is Upsell?

What is Upsell? Offering an upgraded or pricier version of the product a customer is choosing.

## How it works in practice

Upsell is an 'experience upgrade.' The customer already wants to buy — you're just asking 'how much?' and 'what level?' In a good upsell, the customer feels they got more value, not that they were sold something.

## Related metrics

- AOV — upsell increases it
- Cross-Sell — the line between upsell and cross-sell is sometimes blurry
- LTV — a customer who bought premium tends to stay premium
- Pricing Strategy — upsell requires clear price tiers

## Common misconception

'Upsell means pushing customers to spend more.' A bad upsell feels like pressure. A good upsell feels like 'I saw you chose X — did you know for $15 more you get Y and Z?' The difference: information versus pressure. If the customer never heard about the upgraded option, they can't choose it.

## How to fix it

Upsell not working? (1) Check timing — offering it before they've decided what to buy is too early. Offering it on the product page is right, (2) check the value proposition — what does the customer gain from upgrading? (3) check the price gap — a gap under 25% of the base price makes it easier to say yes.

## Real-world example

A sunglasses store offered a 'polarized lenses' upsell (+$22 on a $70 product). 31% accepted it. Average AOV rose by $7. That generated an extra $10,500/month — and satisfaction rose too, since polarized lenses genuinely improve the experience.

## Where to start

Set up upsells for your top 3 products first. Ask: for each product, is there a better version? If so, present it at checkout. Tools: ReConvert, AfterSell (Shopify).
