# What is Traffic Sources?

What is Traffic Sources? Where visitors come from: organic (Google), direct, paid (advertising), social, referral, and email.

## How it works in practice

The traffic mix is your 'risk map.' If 80% of traffic comes from one source, you're exposed. An algorithm change or a rise in CPC can crash revenue. Diversifying sources builds business resilience.

## Related metrics

- SEO — the source of organic traffic
- Paid Ads — the source of paid traffic
- Email Marketing — the source of email traffic
- Direct Traffic — a proxy for brand awareness

## Common misconception

'Direct traffic means people typed the URL.' Not entirely. Dark Social (WhatsApp, Slack, SMS) is often classified as Direct. Email links without UTMs are also often misclassified as Direct.

## How to fix it

Traffic from a source dropped sharply? (1) GA4 → Acquisition → Traffic Acquisition, (2) Organic dropped: check Google Search Console, (3) Paid dropped: verify the campaign is active, (4) Direct dropped: check SSL and redirects.

## Real-world example

A bookstore: 92% of traffic from Organic. A Core Update hit — traffic dropped 40% in a week. It took 4 months to build Email and Social as backup. Afterward: 55% Organic / 25% Email / 20% Paid.

## Where to start

Healthy target: no source above 60% of total traffic. SEO and Email are the best for long-term stability.
