# What is Tokenization?

What is Tokenization? Replacing a credit card number with a unique string (a token) for storage and reuse.

## How it works in practice

Tokenization is what lets Shopify, Amazon, and any store that saves cards charge again without the customer re-entering details. The token is worthless to a thief because it can't be used outside the system that generated it.

## Related metrics

- PCI DSS — tokenization is a core compliance tool
- Subscription — recurring billing relies on tokens
- Payment Gateway — the gateway generates and manages tokens
- Fraud Prevention — reduces exposure to data theft

## Common misconception

'Tokenization is the same as encryption.' It's not. Encryption converts data into a hidden but decryptable form. Tokenization replaces it entirely — there's no way to 'decrypt' a token back into a card number.

## How to fix it

Customers can't save a card for future purchases? (1) Verify the gateway supports card vaulting and tokenization, (2) verify PCI compliance is intact, (3) on Shopify: Shop Pay does this automatically. On WooCommerce: WooCommerce Payments plus Stripe.

## Real-world example

A supplements store offered a monthly subscription. Its old gateway didn't support tokenization, forcing customers to re-enter their card every month. 34% abandoned at that point. Switching to Stripe with token storage cut subscription churn to 8%.

## Where to start

Essential for any business offering subscriptions or repeat purchases. Set up tokenization before offering 'save my card.' Without it, you can't offer a one-click experience to repeat customers.
