# What is Sitemap XML?

What is Sitemap XML? An XML file at yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml that lists all of a site's pages for crawling and indexing.

## How it works in practice

A sitemap is the 'table of contents' you hand Google. Instead of letting Google discover pages on its own, you present an organized list. A store that adds new products frequently sees a sitemap cut indexing time from weeks to days.

## Related metrics

- Crawl Budget — a sitemap helps make the most of crawl budget
- GSC — sitemaps are submitted via GSC
- Robots.txt — robots.txt points to the sitemap's location
- Technical SEO — a sitemap is a basic technical component

## Common misconception

'A sitemap guarantees indexing.' A sitemap is a suggestion to Google, not a command. Google can still decide not to index a page even if it's in the sitemap (thin content, duplicate content, low authority). A sitemap speeds up crawling — it doesn't guarantee ranking.

## How to fix it

Sitemap not driving indexing? (1) GSC → Sitemaps — submit and check status, (2) Check the sitemap includes only pages with a self-referencing canonical URL (not pages pointing to another page), (3) Check the sitemap is up to date — a store with 1,000 products and a sitemap from 2019 is useless, (4) A dynamic sitemap — Shopify and Yoast generate one automatically.

## Real-world example

Judaica store: added 200 new products. Without an updated sitemap, Google found them after 6 weeks. Switched to a dynamic sitemap (auto-updating) + submitted to GSC: new products indexed within 3-7 days.

## Where to start

A sitemap is an absolute must. Shopify: yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml — automatic. WooCommerce + Yoast SEO: automatic. Submit via GSC → Sitemaps. Check quarterly: errors and submitted vs. indexed.
