# What is Google Tag Manager (GTM)?

What is Google Tag Manager (GTM)? A free Google tool for managing and publishing tracking code (tags) on your site without touching the codebase.

## How it works in practice

GTM is the 'control panel' for all tracking. Without GTM, every pixel requires a developer. With GTM, you add a Meta Pixel, Google Ads conversion tag, Hotjar, and Klaviyo in 10 minutes, without code. Changing tracking doesn't require a deploy. The marketing team becomes self-sufficient.

## Related metrics

- Google Analytics — the GA4 tag lives in GTM

## Common misconception

'GTM is enough for all tracking.' GTM covers client-side tracking well. But after iOS 14 and privacy updates, client-side tracking (regular GTM) loses 20-40% of data. Server-side GTM (running on your own server) is more accurate. For large stores, server-side is essential.

## How to fix it

GTM not firing tags correctly? (1) GTM Preview Mode — check the tag fires on the right event, (2) check trigger conditions — 'page view' vs 'specific page' vs 'custom event,' (3) tag sequencing — some tags must run before others (GA4 config before GA4 events).

## Real-world example

Supplements store: a developer was needed for every tracking change. Moved to GTM: the marketing manager adds Hotjar herself (10 minutes), sets up a new conversion event for a new tool (5 minutes), adds an A/B test script (3 minutes). Developer time for marketing needs dropped 90%.

## Where to start

GTM is a day-1 setup. Install it before any other pixel. Shopify: GTM4WP app. WooCommerce: PixelYourSite plugin. Afterward: Meta Pixel + GA4 + Google Ads — all managed through GTM.
